This unofficial medal - the Bomber Command Commemorative Medal - was launched by Lady Harris and the late Air Vice Marshal D.C.T. Bennett CB, DSO,FRAeS, in April 1985. An unofficial award, it was nevertheless taken up by several thousand Bomber Command veterans, and their next of kin.
