Awarded to Surgeon Major J. Fitzmaurice, Army Medical Department.(1843-1882) Surgeon Major. Born 15 June 1843, died 5 September 1882. L.K.Q.C.P. Ireland and Lm. 1865; L.R.C.S.I. 1864. Assistant Surgeon staff 2 October 1866; Surgeon army medical Department 2 October 1866; Surgeon Major A.M.D.; 2 October 1878. Died at sea on S.S. 'Thibet' 5 September 1882.
Service: South Africa 1878-9. Surgeon-Major. Fitzmaurice, J. Served in the first phase of the war with Pearsons Column. Was present at the battle of Nyezane, and was S.M.O at Eshowe throughout the blockade. Afterwards had temporary charge of the Base Field Hospital on the Lower Tugela. Subsequently proceeded to Utrecht, He Commended Military nursing staff during his tendure as senior Medical Officer at Utrecht, notably praising Sister Janet Wells for her devotion to the sick and wounded and was in charge of the Base Field Hospital of the Flying Column at that station till the conclusion of the war
